How to fill out a trailer bill of sale
- Choose the trailer type and copy its details. Year, make, model, the VIN from the title, registration or the frame tag, the length and the GVWR from the manufacturer's sticker.
- Add the seller, the buyer and the deal. Full names and addresses, the date, the price and how it was paid. Choose "as is" or write the warranty you are giving.
- Print two copies and sign both. Seller and buyer each keep one. Turn on the notary block if your state or the buyer asks for it.
Does a trailer need a title?
It depends on the state and often on the trailer's weight. Many states title trailers above a weight limit and only register the light ones, and a few do not title trailers at all. If the trailer has a title, the seller signs it over and the bill of sale goes with it. If it does not, the bill of sale is usually the main proof of ownership the buyer needs to register it - check your state DMV's rules for your trailer's weight.
What is GVWR and why include it?
The gross vehicle weight rating is the most the trailer may weigh loaded, set by the manufacturer and printed on the sticker or plate on the tongue or frame. Registration fees, plate types and brake rules often depend on it, so the DMV may ask for it. It also tells the buyer what the trailer is built to carry.
What if the trailer has no VIN?
Homemade and some older trailers have no VIN plate. Enter whatever serial number is stamped on the frame, or leave the field blank and describe the trailer clearly. To register a trailer without a VIN, many states require an inspection and assign their own number, so the buyer should check with the DMV before paying.
Is there an odometer disclosure?
No. Trailers have no engine and no odometer, so the federal mileage disclosure used for cars and motorcycles does not apply. This form leaves it out.
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no trial and no card: fill in the form and download the PDF. There is no subscription to cancel later. The free PDF carries a small "Made with DittoFox" mark at the bottom of the page.
